![]() Difference in paying $120/hr and free is paying for it I can fly where I want, with who I want, and whenever I want. What's ignorant is a skydiver wondering why the pilot won't stay out at a DZ from 9-5 and assume he is paying his bills with Monopoly money. Especially the guys flying twin otters, PAC 750s, and Caravans. Go somewhere away from a bunch of professional pilot degree flight students and I'll bet those guys get paid. Because they were a bunch of dumb college kids that didn't want to flight instruct to build hours. That's why you had a bunch of pilots that would fly for free. We are near a major college with a flight school Go ahead, let him call you a spineless pussy. If you can build 50 hours for free, and it costs the next guy 20k to do the same, just laugh inside knowing you won't be paying your hours off for 4 years. Anyone who tells you otherwise is absolutely ignorant. If you are looking to build hours in one of the most expensive careers out there, and you have an opportunity to do it free, there is no reason why flying skydivers for free makes you a bad guy. If you need to fly to make a career then go to a dropzone that pays. As a matter of fact, we have multiple CFIs that come and fly for us and won't accept pay because they consider it their "fun" weekend flying. Anyone who says they are flying for free is ignorant. We are near a major college with a flight school so it's an amazing way to build free hours for them with exciting flying. The instructors all took a voluntary pay cut, and the pilots were impressed seeing as they were more than happy with the hours as payment. I'm a skydiving instructor and PPL and while we do pay our pilots, we never did in the past.
